Glass blowing is the craft of making glassware by blowing air through a tube of semi molten glass. It is the technique of transforming the molten glass that involves focus, skill, while inflating a bubble into the glass itself. This is done with the aid of an iron rod, usually 5 or 6 feet, and a blow tube or hole at the end of the rod. Molten glass is formed by heating quartz in a furnace molten glass is created by heating quartz sand to extremely high temperatures. This practice started round 4000 BC, going through the Egyptian and Roman culture and advancing from there. When glass blowing first began, only the wealthy were able to afford and obtain it, now it is a universal art that any artist can learn to do. I have learned a great deal about the tradition of glass blowing, and I’ve also become experienced with it first hand. Glass blowing is has become a great way for me to advance from 2D art to 3D, and is a beautiful and unique medium to work with.
